Custom Furniture and Accessories

Architecture defines the size, shape and appearance of spaces. It defines the play of light on surfaces and how people move through their built environment. Once a building is constructed, the design is not complete. There are countless discrete design problems to solve: the selection and placement of objects and furniture; the finish and decoration of floors, walls and ceilings; and the treatment at windows and doors. The design of the interior is essential to the completion of the architecture.

Thomas Felton was introduced to the highest level of interior design at the office of the legendary Mark Hampton. It was here that his passion for the design of furniture and decorative objects was born. Mark was a traditionalist at heart, but his designs were always fresh and new. Mr. Felton learned his approach to furniture and interior decoration here. It starts with the choice of a truly fine object for a room; this could be a rug, piece of furniture, sculpture, crystal, etc. and then the design is built around this piece. Everything adds to the beauty of the entire room and the piece, so that nothing could be added, changed or taken away without lessening the perfection of the whole composition.

Mr. Felton also spent a number of years in the office of Peter Marino. Marino's sensibilities are much more modern, based in 20th Century abstract art and in the innovation of the Modern Designers of this same period such as Jean-Michel Franc, Ruhlman, Jansen and Dupré-Lafon. Their innovations created sleek, taut pieces with exotic finishes and patterns.

Traditional Architecture, Inc., believes it is essential to use the lessons of the past as well as the innovations of the future for the design of decorative art. The most exceptional and beautiful pieces are able to combine these two sensibilities seamlessly. Rooted in the classical and traditional, but influenced by functional minimal modern design.

There are three components to the creation of an object: its design, material and finish. Each must be studied and work together to complete a piece. But it is this three-part combination that gives richness to objects. A richness seen in a delicate carved detail, a hand rubbed finish, a band of inlay mother of pearl, or a sharkskin surface. Traditional Architecture, Inc., has designed a large array of pieces; from large mahogany breakfront dining cabinets to custom fabricated metal towel racks. We have established relationships with vendors and artisans that are able to create in wood, metal, stone, glass, porcelain, tile or bronze. This allows for virtually no limit to the creative possibilities.
